Reeds beschadigd. Raad eens door wie?

Deze blog is internationaal en ik hoop van harte dat deze ook de wereld rond gaat. Zo ziet men ook eens in het "buitenland" hoe het er hier in Belgie toegaat.De verlichting werd opnieuw geplaatst en is de keuze van de opdrachtgever.

Een betondal is 30 cm. Kijk maar eens naar de beginpositie en naar de eindpositie. Dit is niet handmatig gebeurd maar met kracht.

Op het voetpad ziet men duidelijkde sporen van rubber bij het afremmen of kort draaien van het montagetoestel of het voor het opstellen en monteren van de kermisattractie. Andere opnamen worden niet gepubliceerd op deze blogspot om reden van eventuele gerechterlijke vervolging voor het beschadigen van een monument. De gemeente Langemark-Poelkapelle werd in kennis gesteld van dit voorval. We wachten af welke actie hier tegen wordt genomen, indien niet, moet er privé overgegaan worden tot vaststelling van de feiten aan de hand van het nodige fotomateriaal en de verklaringen van de opdrachtgever die op het moment van de feiten ter plaatse aanwezig was.

Gezien de opdrachtgever een Brits is kon hij inderdaad niet op de hoogte zijn van onze Belgische wetgeving terzake en kon dus ook niet adequaat reageren op wat er hier gebeurde.

Deze mensen die dit project met eigen middelen financieren zijn beschaamd over deze totaal respectvolle en met opzet of niet gepleegde vernieling.

Als Belg schaam ik mij dit te laten gebeuren. Ik hoop dat het gemeentebestuur van Langemark-Poelkapelle hier een duidelijk standpunt inneemt.

Kijk eens even boven het hoofd van Chris, waar men duidelijk de sporen ziet van voormalige opstellingen van dit circus. We hoeven verder geen tekening te maken van wat er met het nieuwe voetpad gaat gebeuren.

Aan de voorzijde ziet men duidelijk de sporen van het indrukken van de omheining op de kop van de muur. Het is duidelijk dat hier met kracht tegengereden werd.

De omheiningng werd meer dan 50 cm in de vloer van het monumet geduwd. Het koperwerk werd geplooid en de hoek werd door de druk afgebroken.

Verlichting wordt geplaatst in de week van 7 september.

How the tradition began
In 1928, a year after the inauguration of the Menin Gate Memorial, a number of prominent citizens in Ypres decided that some way should be found to express the gratitude of the Belgian nation towards those who had died for its freedom and independence.
The idea of the daily sounding of the Last Post - the traditional salute to the fallen warrior - was that of the Superintendant of the Ypres Police, Mr P Vandenbraambussche. The Menin Gate Memorial on the east side of Ypres was thought to be the most appropriate location for the ceremony. Originally this was the location of the old city gate leading to the Ypres Salient battlefields and The Menin Road, through which so many British and Commonwealth troops had passed on their way to the Allied front line.
The privilege of playing Last Post was given to buglers of the local volunteer Fire Brigade. The first sounding of Last Post took place on 1 July 1928 and a daily ceremony was carried on for about four months. The ceremony was reinstated in the spring of 1929 and the Last Post Committee was established. Four silver bugles were donated to the Last Post Committee by the Brussels and Antwerp Branches of the Royal British Legion.
From 11 November, 1929 the Last Post has been sounded at the Menin Gate memorial every night and in all weathers. The only exception to this was during the four years of the German occupation of Ypres from 20 May 1940 to 6 September 1944. The daily ceremony was instead continued in England at Brookwood Military Cemetery, Surrey. On the very evening that Polish forces liberated Ypres the ceremony was resumed at the Menin Gate, in spite of the heavy fighting still going on in other parts of the town.
When the Last Post returned to Ieper (Ypres) after the Second World War the Brookwood Last Post Association (under Colonel McKay) continued and still continues to sound the Last Post at Brookwood Military Cemetery on the first Sunday of the month at 16.00 hours GMT (UTC). The Brookwood Last Post Association makes an annual pilgrimage to Ieper and the Ypres Salient around the month of April.
The Origin of 'Reveille' and 'Last Post'
The tradition of sounding a bugle or drum at various stages of a soldier's day originated in the British Army. In the military camp at the start of the day a wake-up bugle call 'Réveille' from the French word réveiller - to wake up - would be played. At various times of the day inspections would be made of each sentry post and a bugle call played at each post.
The tradition of the final bugle call of the day signalling the end of the soldier's day dates back to the 17th century when the British Amry was on campaign in the Netherlands. There was already a Dutch custom in existance called Taptoe. This was a signal at the end of the day to shut off the beer barrel taps and the name comes from the Dutch "Doe den tap toe" - "turn the tap off". From that time the British Army adopted a routine of also sounding drum beats as the officer on duty made his rounds in the evening to check sentry posts and to call off-duty soldiers out of the pub and back to their billets. When the bugle call of 'Last Post' was sounded at the final sentry post inspection this was the final warning that everyone should be back in their billets.
The 'Last Post' bugle call is used at military funerals, memorials and times of Remembrance. It symbolises the 'end of the soldier's day' in so far as the dead soldier has finished his duty and can rest in peace.
The Ypres Bugles
In the 1950s two silver bugles were presented by the Old Contemptibles' Association of Blackpool and Fleetwood and two silver trumpets were presented by Colonel I Whitaker to the memory of former Cavalry and Artillerymen.
In 1992 six new silver bugles were presented to the Last Post Association by the Royal Corps of Transport.

He will be assisted by Padre Patrick Irwin of SHAPE ( Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe ) This really is a great honour for the Memorial and we appreciate their joint time and dedication. They will be both assisted by the Parish Priest of Poelkapelle. Canon Revd Ray Jones, assisted by the ACG will say prayers during the evenings Last Post Ceremony. The Tank Memorial now has it's very own piper! He is Eric Remy of the Ypres Surrey Pipes & Drums. He is also the Official Piper for the Last Post Association. Eric will be playing at the Tank Memorial Inauguration Ceremony and at future tank ceremonies. We are indeed privilaged to have such talent included amongst the Tank Memorial team.

Het Tank Memorial heeft nu zijn eigen doedelzakspeler. Het is Eric Remy van de Ypres Surrey Pipes & Drums. Hij is ook de officiële doedelzakspeler van de Last Post Association.

The British Army Assistant Chaplain General, Francis Barber, the senior serving Chaplain of the British Army offers his services free of charge for the religious service at the Inauguration Ceremony and makes it known that he would be honored to attend from his British Army Garrison base in Germany.

Chris asked Cindy Timperman (Village Langemark- Poelkapelle)to respectfully invite on our behalf, the Village priest of Poelkapelle to share the service with the Army Chaplain. I feel this would be proper with due respect to the people of the Village, to himself as it is his parish after all and also to show respect to the Belgian troops also commemorated on the Memorial.

1st VC to the Tank Corps. They will be bringing with them his actual VC to the Inauguration Ceremony and to his grave side Ceremony.

The Great Nephew of Pte Cyril Sheldon Allen DCM.
His DCM was awarded alongside Capt Clement Robertson's VC.
His DCM will also be alongside this famous VC during the weekend ceremonies.
2 very famous medals awarded to 2 very brave men together on their very own battlefield.

The Grand children & family of Capt Richardson MC, CdG. Section Leader and crewman commanding F41 FRAY BENTOS on the day this tank became a Tank Corps legend. They are also bringing along his MC & CdG.

Family members of Lt Coghlan MC. Tank Commander D 29 DAMON II. This is the tank that was knocked out and then stood on the site of the proposed Tank Memorial for many years as a Monument.
His family and medal Group will also be in attendance.

The Tank Memorial Ypres Salient Inauguration weekend is shaping up to be very special indeed!

Tramping Along door de basisschool van Poelkapelle

In World War I during the retreat from Mons, Bridges found at St Quentin two exhausted British battalions whose commanding officers had assured the mayor that they would surrender to save the town from bombardment. Despite a shattered cheekbone and concussion, Bridges rallied the men with a tin whistle and toy drum and led them off to rejoin General French's army. The incident became famous. Appointed C.M.G. in 1915, Bridges received many foreign decorations and rapid promotion to major general. He lost a leg at Passchendaele and subsequently led two war missions overseas. For exploits in the Balkans, Russia and Asia Minor, he was appointed K.C.M.G. (1919) and K.C.B. (1925). His uncle Robert Bridges, the poet laureate, honoured him with an ode, 'To His Excellency'.

In de eerste dagen van WO1, tijdens de terugtocht uit Mons, trof Majoor Bridges te St. Quentin twee uitgeputte Britse bataljons aan. Hun bevelvoerende officieren hadden de burgemeester beloofd dat ze zich zouden overgeven om de stad voor het bombardement te sparen.
Ondanks een gesplinterd kaaksbeen en een hersenschudding bracht Maj. Bridges de manschappen terug op de been met een klein tinnen fluitje en een oude speelgoed trommel. Beide bataljons vervoegden op de tonen van de marsmuziek het leger van Generaal French.

De basisschool van Poelkapelle kreeg de muziek en tekst ter studie en de melodie zal waarschijnlijk uitgevoerd worden op de inhuldigingsplechtigheid van het Tank Memorial op 10 oktober 2009.

Bouwplan van het Tank Memorial

Het Tank Memorial wordt gebouwd met weersbestendige zwarte steen en zwarte cement.

De zwarte steen symboliseert het robuuste en hard werkende Tank Regiment en is vandaag nog altijd de kleur van het Royal Tank Regiment.

De ingesloten kolom, ook in zwarte steen is de exacte hoogte van een Mk 4 tank en draagt de zwart granieten tekstplaat.

Het vloergedeelte is een plan op ware grootte van de bewegingsruimte in het gevechtscompartiment van de Mk4. De kleuren symboliseren de positie van de 8 bemanningsleden in deze beperkte ruimte.

De kleuren zijn:

Bruin: de totale beschikbare ruimte in het gevechtscompartiment

Zwart: de motor

Groen: tankcommandant, bestuurder en 2 man voor aandrijving, versnelling, munitie

Rood: langs beide zijden 2 schutters - 2 x Lewis gun - 2x 6 ponds geschut

In totaal 8 bemanningsleden.

De kleuren symboliseren ook de vlag en het moto van het Royal Tank Regiment.

Links bovenop de ommuring wordt een informatiepaneel geplaatst met originele foto's van die periode. Het monument bevat een memorial register en een bezoekersboek voor aantekeningen en of opmerkingen die u heeft tijdens uw bezoek.

De kans bestaat dat er een origineel restant van een echte tank, misschien D5 DAKOIT aan het monument wordt vastgehecht.

Voor dit monument werd een bouwaanvraag ingediend en overgemaakt aan de bevoegde instanties.

Dear Sir/Madam.

My name is Chris Lock and I served with the 3rd Royal Tank Regiment. Today I am an active member of the Royal Tank Regiment Association and I live and work in Ieper (Ypres) I am writing to give your Branch notice of a brand new Tank Memorial to be constructed this summer in the Village of Poelkapelle, Belgium.
France has two Tank Memorials representing the Great War tank actions whilst there is not one in Belgium, let alone in the infamous Ypres Salient battlefields.
The Tank Memorial Ypres Salient has already been paid for in its entirety. However; I do understand that if RTR HQ, the Regiments themselves and our Associations wish to offer some financial assistance for the upkeep and maintenance of the Memorial once built, then that offer will be most welcome. The proposed Tank Memorial itself is simply stunning and is badly needed. The tank crews that fought here in such tragic and hopeless circumstances yet at the same time with so much bravery and determination deserve it! I believe the Tank Memorial Ypres Salient Inauguration Ceremony could also become one of the RTR Association calendar highlights and I also believe that the proposed accompanying annual ceremonies will be likewise.
　
　
TANK MEMORIAL YPRES SALIENT
DETAILS.

The Tank Memorial Ypres Salient will be built of black brick and black cement. Brick represents the robustness of this hard working Regiment. Black represents the singular colour of the Royal Tank Regiment today.
The enclosed Brick column is the same height as a MK 4 tank. The frontage is wide enough to carry the Memorial black granite text plate. The width of the column represents the dimensions of a MK4 tank track complete with mud spuds.
The Memorial Register Book will contain the names, the CWGC or Missing Memorial for every fallen tank soldier buried or commemorated in the Ypres Salient.
It will contain all relevant information on the Tank Memorial itself and a section will also list the details of all personnel and associations who donate to the Tank Memorial or who were involved in making this much needed Tank Memorial become a reality in perpetuity.
A Memorial Visitors Book will also be available for your comments upon visiting.
A Garden of Remembrance will be prepared at the Inauguration Ceremony and at the annual Ceremony. This will be situated inside the Memorial enclosure. The garden will contain a personalised Poppy Cross for every single Tank Crewman buried or commemorated in the Salient today. They will sit in planters containing Flanders field’s mud.
The Memorial Enclosure will also contain - to scale walk in silhouette - all crew members’ positions inside the fighting compartment of a MK 4 Tank.
Three flags will be flown. The UK and Belgium flag throughout the tourist season with the RTR flag of today at the various annual ceremonies.
An information board with photographs will reveal D 29 DAMON II knocked out and bogged down not 30 yards from where this Tank Memorial is to stand. That tank was hauled from the mud after the War and stood on the very spot where this Tank Memorial is to stand today to commemorate all tank actions throughout the entire Ypres Salient. The Germans took it away in WW2 and it was never returned.
This will be a most special symbolic Tank Memorial indeed!

Location. The Village of Reutel near Polygon Wood.
VC & DCM tank action battlefield tour. We will walk in the footsteps of Capt Robertson & Pte Cyril Allen which would lead to the 1st VC to be awarded to the Tank Corps during the Great War and Pte Allen’s much deserved DCM. He will also fall in battle several weeks later at Cambrai! This battlefield tour is very easy to follow and only involves a short walk of approximately 500 yards on tarmac. This walk is tremendous and you will not fail to be left overawed by the actions of these two very brave tank men.

There will be two tank action tours, one immediately following the other:
TOUR 1.
The 1st tour will involve a short drive to the actual location of one of the Great War’s most heroic tank actions.
Tank F41 FRAY BENTOS was knocked out in "No Man’s Land" and withstood almost 3 full days of constant enemy infantry assaults, shelling and machine gun barrages. The tank was penetrated many times by shot and shell and all crew members were either killed or wounded. They were also attacked by their own side who believed the Germans had captured the tank. 2 MC’s, 1 DCM & 6 MM’s later and a Tank Corps legend was born!
TOUR 2.
The second tour will start and finish at the Tank Memorial and reveals the magnificent and then tragic story of D Battalion Tank Corps assault into the fortified Village of Poelcapelle on October 4th & 9th 1917. This tour will be given by Johan Vanbeselaere of the P1917A group. He is also the Belgium Representative to the Tank Memorial Ypres Salient and has been heavily involved since the beginning. Johan is a living encyclopaedia on the Salient tank actions. His tank action photograph collection is unique and many of these photos can be matched to the battlefields of then to the landscape of today. For tank men everywhere, these tank tours are not to be missed!

Inhuldigingsceremonie week-end 10 & 11 oktober 2009

Zaterdag 10 oktober 2009 - 9.30 uur

Battlefield tour langs kapitein Robertson's tank route en de plaats waar hij sneuvelde (VC Cross) + soldaat Allen zijn DCM site.

Dit was het eerste Victoria Cross voor het Tank Corps.

Soldaat Allen werd onderscheiden met het DCM voor zij assistentie van Kapt. Robertson in deze actie. Sdt Allen overleefde dit gevecht maar zou 2 weken later sneuvelen in Cambrai (Fr).

Rondleiding langs Kapt. Robertson's tank route die hij volgde op 4 oktober 1917. Er wordt halt gehouden op de plaats waar hij sneuvelde. Dit was ook de plek waar Sdt. Cyril Sheldon Allen die Kapt. Robertson assiteerde zijn DCM onderscheiding behaalde. Alhoewel danig geschokt en in de lucht geblazen overleefde Sdt. Allen deze aanval maar sneuvelde op 20 november 1917 te Cambrai.
Indien men het wenst kan men hier poppy crosses neerleggen.
Voor dit gedeelte is eigen vervoer vereist want het is 15 minuten rijden van de VC/DCM site naar Oxford Road CWGC waar Kapt. Robertson begraven werd.
Voor beiden wordt hier een speciale herdenkingsceremonie gehouden.

Oxford Road CWGC 11.00 uur

De familie van Kapt. Clement Robertson zal aanwezig zijn op deze speciale ceremonie en brengt Clement's VC naar zijn laatste rustplaats.

Tank Memorial inhuldigingsceremonie 14.00 uur

Menin Gate Last Post ceremonie 20.00 uur

Dit is een speciale plechtigheid ter ere van het TANK MEMORIAL YPRES SALIENT.

Parking Guynemerplein te Poelkapelle

Tank action battlefield tour.

Rondleiding in Poelkapelle met assistentie van fotografen die een reportage maken over de tankaanvallen van 4 en 9 oktober 1917. Er wordt halt gehouden waar DREADNAUGHT II, DOUBLE DEE II, DASHING DRAGOON II, DEUCE OF DIAMONDS, DAMON II, DOLLY, DUSKY DIS en DOP DOCTOR verzonken in de modder of aan flarden werden geschoten.

De rondleiding vervolgt de aanvalsroute van D5 DAKOIT. Verschillende crewmannen werden gedood of zwaar gewond. Er bestaat een kleine mogelijkheid dat een restant van D5 aan het monument vastgehecht wordt.

Johan van beselaere vertelt het verhaal van D5 DAKOIT.
De tank kwam vast te zitten voor de vernietigde kerk en uitgeschakeld op 4 oktober 1917. Een observatieplaat van de geschutskoepel van DAKOIT werd recent aan het tankmonument geschonken. Het werd op het slagveld teruggevonden. Johan die als kind opgroeide in Poelkapelle herinnert zich nog dat hij speelde met het toen nog onbekende relict. Hij kon zich toen nog niet voorstellen hoe betrokken hij zou raken met het verhaal van de tanks en bemanningen van de Grote Oorlog.

Verder naar Galipolli farm. Dit is het actiegebied van F41 FRAY BENTOS. Deze tank die vastgelopen was in niemandsland heeft het 60 uur volgehouden tegen verschillende Duitse infanterieaanvallen. De tank werd doorzeeft met AP kogels en zwaar toegetakeld door de Duitse artillerie. Tot overmaat van ramp werden ze aangevallen door de eigen troepen die dachten dat de F41 in handen was van de Duitse infanterie. Dit is een verhaal van moed en ongelooflijk veel geluk. De bemanning werd onderscheiden met 2 x MC, 1 x DCM, en 6 MM's.

De dag wordt afgesloten met een bezoek aan de replica in aanbouw van de D29 DAMON II naast het tankmonument.

Johan van beselaere en de P1917A groep bouwen een 1:1 replica van een MK 4 tank ter nagedachtenis van D29 DAMON II. Johan geeft uitleg over de start van het project en het verdere verloop van de reconstructie.

D29 DAMON II stond als monument op het gemeenteplein van Poelkapelle waar het door de Duitsers in 1941 werd weggehaald voor metaalschroot.

YPRES SALIENT

"FEAR NAUGHT"

THIS MEMORIAL COMMEMORATES THE TANK CORPS, FORMER HEAVY BRANCH MACHINEGUN CORPS TANK CREWMEN AND ACCOMPANYING INFANTERYMEN WHO FOUGHT AND FELL IN THE YPRES SALIENT. THESE ASSAULTS SUPPORTED BY ARMOUR WERE CARRIED OUT IN THE MOST ATROCIOUS CONDITIONS. THESE BRAVE MEN FOUGHT AN EQUALLY BRAVE, RESILIENT AND WELL ENTRENCHED ENEMY AS WELL AS THE VERY BATTLEFIELD ITSELF! ON OCTOBER 9th 1917, EIGHT TANKS DEPLOYED INTO THIS SYMBOLIC VILLAGE. ALLEITHER SANK DEEP INTO THE MUD OR WERE DESTROYED WITH MANY CREWMEN BEING KILLED AND WOUNDED. TANK DAMON II SLIPPED INTO A DEEP SHELL CRATER AND WAS KNOCKED OUT ON THE SIDE OF THIS CROSS ROADS. LATER IT WAS PLACED AS A MONUMENT ON THE VERY SPOT WHERE THIS TANK MEMORIAL STANDS TODAY.

THIS WAS THE LAST ATTEMPT TO DEPLOY TANKS EN MASSE INTO THE QUAGMIRE OF THE YPRES SALIENT. AS FAR AS THE TANK CREWS WERE CONCERNED, THE YPRES SALIENT HAD ACQUIRED A NEW NAME:

"THE CEMETERY OF THE TANKS"

"FROM MUD, TROUGH BLOOD TO THE GREEN FIELDS BEYOND"

MUCH OF THE VILLAGE WAS CAPTURED DURING THIS FINAL 3rd BATTLE OF YPRES ASSAULTS. HOWEVER, THE BRITISH WERE UNABLE TO HOLD THEIR GAINS.POELCAPELLE ITSELF WOULD CHANGE HANDS AGAIN AND AGAIN UNTIL ITS FINAL CAPTURE BY BELGIAN TROOPS UNDER THEIR KING IN THE FINAL ADVANCE

OF 1918

Inhuldiging

De inhuldiging van het Tank Memorial is voorien tijdens het week-end van 10 en 11 oktober 2009. De inhuldigingsceremonie van het Tank Memorial begint op zaterdag 10 oktober 2009 om 14 uur op het Guynemerplein te Poelkapelle.

Op zaterdag 10 oktober 2009 om 20 uur zal door de Last Post Association aan de Menenpoort een speciale herdenkingsceremonie ter ere van het Tank Memorial Ypres Salient gehouden worden. Voor verdere informatie voor de Last Post zie www.lastpost.be.

Tijdens dit week-end zullen er ook battlefield tours georganiseerd worden.
Meer details zullen verstrekt worden in het ceremonie programma.

Jaarlijks rond 9 oktober en tijdens het week-end zal er een plechtigheid plaatsvinden ter nagedachtenis van de tanksoldaten en toegevoegde infanterie. De datum zal later bekend gemaakt worden.

Het concept

Het Tank Memorial herdenkt het TANK CORPS, HEAVY BRANCH MACHINE GUN CORPS en de toegevoegde infanterie/tank acties in de Ieper Salient tijdens de Grote Oorlog.

De gemeente Poelkapelle is de gastheer van het Tank Memorial voor de ganse Ieper Salient. Poelkapelle was een van de vele slagvelden tijdens de 3de slag om Ieper in 1917, waar infanteriegevechten ondersteund werden door tanks.

Het Tank Memorial is een privaat gesponsord initiatief. Het bouwperceel daarentegen werd door het Vlaams Gewest, het gemeentebestuur en de bevolking van Langemark-Poelkapelle in bruikleen gegeven.

Het Memorial bevat een Memorial boek en een gastenboek ter nagedachtenis van alle 242 tanksoldaten die in de Ieper Salient begraven werden en herdacht worden.

In de vloer van het monument is een plan op schaal verwerkt die het gevechtscompartiment van een MK4 tank weergeeft. De positie en de ruimte die de tankbemanning ter beschikking had zal duidelijk in de vloer aangebracht worden in de kleuren van het Royal Tank Regiment nl. bruin - rood- groen.

Aan de linkerzijde wordt een informatiepaneel met tekst en originele afbeeldingen aangebracht.

De inplanting van het monument is voorzien naast het Guynemermonument, op de plaats waar ooit de "Tank van Poelkapelle" stond.

Poelkapelle is Guynemer en Poelkapelle zal ook de standplaats voor het Tank Memorial van de Ypres Salient zijn.

Ik hoop dat de beelden het antwoord treffend weergeven. Deze ongelooflijk moedige mannen hebben veel te lang moeten wachten op een gedenkteken ter nagedachtenis voor hun verliezen en lijden. Het moto van het Tanks Corps ' FROM MUD, TROUGH BLOOD, TO THE GREEN FIELDS BEYOND ' geeft een duidelijk antwoord op hun vraag."
